Yet another album from GLARING, Anna Nin's solo project, one might think. Yes, but this time it's a „real“ new album, whereas some of the previous releases were „just“ vinyl releases of previously known tracks or collaborations. However, GLARING's incredible productivity and consistent quality shows that you can build up a loyal fan base with a continuous presence.
The fact that different musical focal points are set time and again also shows how many-sided GLARING is. Sometimes catchy, sometimes wavy and sometimes darkwavy, „Funeral Party“ is not as dark as the title might suggest, but extremely atmospheric and almost floating and ethereal. Of course, without going in a completely new direction.
It is certainly no coincidence that this is reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins during their „Victorialand“-period, albeit without Liz Fraser's distinctive vocals. When singer Svanur's vocals are used here and there, they serve more as an additional instrument that supports the overall atmospheric picture of the songs and never stand alone. On these tracks in particular, a slight reminiscence of the „Wish“ outtakes on The Cure's „Lost Wishes“ cassette from 1993 comes to mind from time to time, only very distantly of course.
The mixture of flat keyboard sounds and echoing guitars somewhere between Robin Guthrie and And Also The Trees remains irresistible, even on the umpteenth GLARING-album in a short time. Music for the autumnal view of the vastness of the ocean.
