MECANO is a legendary Dutch post-punk band, founded in 1978 in Amsterdam, by Dirk Polak and Pieter Kooyman. Started out as a punk band, they released a first 7” single in 1978, but after they were joined by Tejo Bolten, Cor Bolten and Ton Lebbink around 1979, the style developed into a kind of JOY DIVISION-influenced new wave and art rock. This line-up was active until 1983, and the band released 3 albums on their own label TORSO (which later, in its second incarnation was to become THE leading Dutch Indie label) when singer and band leader Dirk
Polak decided to concentrate on painting and art. The group used different variations of their name at different times, such as Mecano Ltd. (1978), Mecano (1979-1983, 2005-2007), Mecano Unlimited or Mecano Un-Ltd. (1997, 2014-now).
