Les Visiteurs du Soir, true pioneers of French synth-wave [active between 1981 and 1985], recorded their much overdue first and only album, not less than 40 years after they dismantled, aptly entitled ‘1984’. It also contains their track ‘Je T’écris d’un Pays…’, which was written back in 1984 and included on many compilations dedicated to French synth-wave since.
Their electro is totally unclassifiable, somewhere between post-punk and new wave, featuring a dark and melancholic voice that, with great accuracy and commitment, evokes strange life journeys: simple stories written in French and in verse, nourished by numerous references (popular, historical, rebellious), in which ordinary heroes always end up caught up in a tragic fate. Ten fairly short, tense tracks (with relentless rhythms) that featured on the band's setlist during their very last concert 40 years ago...
The high quality of the production (Pierre-Emmanuel Mériaud) is noteworthy, bringing a real touch of modernity to the project with great finesse and inventiveness, while respecting the initial constraint: to record most of the music with the sounds and synths used live by Les Visiteurs du Soir at the time.
Thus, Les Visiteurs du Soir continue the adventure they began in the last century and prove, with the album ‘1984’, that modernity is a definitively timeless concept.
