On SPIRIT ANIMAL, Pittsburgh instrumental duo Zombi moves away from the dark, "70s horror flick background music that inspired its name into warmer, more cosmic (space, heaven, etc.) territory. Which isn"t to say that this is pop music; it"s just that whereas previously Zombi"s analog soundscapes evoked images of armies of undead taking over the planet, SPIRIT ANIMAL conjures space sequences from low budget science fiction movies. Song titles like "Spirit Warrior" and "Earthly Powers" amount to a knowing wink from the band.Zombi, having previous taken cinematic synth based rock as far as it could go, added not only guitars to Spirit Animal but a whole new attitue as well. With an outpouring of genuine emotion and melody, Spirit Animal gives instrumental music the punch in the gut it needed by blending a genuine sense of warmth and emotion with the darkness the band is heralded for.Released February 3rd 2009 on Relapse.Track List:1 Spirit Animal2 Spirit Warrior3 Earthly Powers4 Cosmic Powers5 Through Time
