While a full six years passed between the second and third ADAM USI albums, there is just over a year between „Censored Self-Harm“ from 2024 and the now released „Void Exposure“. So it seems, that ADAM USI had a burst of creativity, which he also expressed in his new project ABFALL – no, not Deutsch-Punk, but fine German-language Minimal-Synth. As a „family member“ of YOUNG & COLD RECORDS, it's clear that „Void Exposure“ will again be released there.
The album offers exactly what you would expect – in the best sense – and hope for from ADAM USI, namely melancholic Wave Pop that is deeply rooted in the 80s and differs from other acts of this genre through its highly emotional and distinctive vocals.
The cornerstones are Synthpop, New Wave, New Romantic and 80s Pop, always with melodies that quickly stick in your ear but are not too shallow. „Circus“ is somewhat reminiscent of Marc Almond's solo work from the late 80s, „Purple Lips“ of Erasure at the time of their second and third albums, and „Wasted In The Wires“ is very new-wavy with its dark bassline and expansive synths. „Buried In The Dust“ also has a striking bass sequence and goes even further in the direction of „Darkwave. With „Take Me By The Hand“, ADAM USI also shows that he has mastered the great 80s ballad, which is also reminiscent of Erasure.
Overall, „Void Exposure“ sounds much “friendlier” than the thematically rather dark „Censored Self-Harm“ – a bit as if ADAM USI has made peace with himself and is now open to new paths. It sounds dramatic, but it's not for nothing that he calls his music „Dramatic Darkwave“.
Listening to ADAM USI's four albums since 2016 in sequence, one recognises a clear line and development and, at the same time, a sense of staying true to himself. This allows perfectly to follow the musician's musical maturation, with „Void Exposure“ representing the musical highlight to date.
